Two time travelers journey into the distant future and find civilization gone and people living as primitively as they did hundreds of thousands of years ago. The local natives are friendly and their hunting/gathering territory is the primary setting for the rest of the book because this small geographical region is completely surrounded by an impassable wall. Cut off by the wall from the rest of the world and living with primitive people who are apparently as ignorant about what happened to the world as they are, the two men soon become discouraged and suspect that they have learned all they will be able to learn about the mystery this impossible future world represents. But brief interspersed chapters giving the story a second level (different characters/setting) make it clear to the reader by this time that the men have only scratched the surface.
