In the summer of 1960 Lawrence, with bitterly-earned high school diploma in hand, leaves New York to study at the Madrid University, anxious to discover the poetry of Lorca and Saint John of the Cross, as well as pursue his love of bullfighting. Travelling to Pamplona in the sidecar of a fellow student's Lambretta, Lawrence runs the bulls, staying well ahead of the herd. There, he befriends a more courageous French novelist, Yves, who fights a bull in the arena with his jacket, for which he's thrown in jail for the rest of the feria. After Yves gets out, the two hitchhike around Spain following the corridas from Valencia, where they run into Orson Welles, and Malaga, where they sleep in the ruins of the Moorish fortress and greet the poet Jean Cocteau.
