The book of “Tobias”, regarded as Scripture by Catholic and Orthodox churches, has been considerably altered from the original camp-fire tale on which it is based. Fortunately, the many erasures and “corrections” have been so sloppily accomplished (e.g., substituting an angel for the helpful Gentile, eliminating the important role played by the hero’s dog and toning down much of the criticism leveled at the original narrator’s neighbors) that it is a comparatively easy matter to restore the tale to its original power. It’s pure fiction, of course (which even the heavily edited Bible version makes plain), but a powerful tale all the same. Hopefully, it will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart!
