One day as he walked across the lawn of their home in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, he shifted his gaze downward and looked closely at the tiny "lilies of the field" in his yard. Like many of us, Harold Hanson had never really looked closely (considered, as Jesus said in Matthew 6:28) at the beauty to be found right at his feet.Thereafter whenever he and his wife hiked in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Valley of Virginia they continued to look down to see what new beauty would be revealed, and they were not often disappointed. Over time he began to make close-up, macro images of these tiny wildflowers, "misplaced plants" (weeds), as well as tiny micro-fauna such as butterflies, beetles, and spiders to reveal the fine details of all these "lilies" that are not visible to the unaided eye.
