The establishment of the Australian Film Development Corporation in 1970 marked the beginning of a period of substantial government involvement in the funding of what was to be known as the New Australian Cinema. The policies of the Corporation as to which projects were to be supported were subject to competing economic and cultural forces. Such a situation raises the following questions: How did the policies of the funding bodies influence the content of films produced at that time? To what extent was it possible for directors working in such an environment to develop their own style and “world view?”These questions are addressed through contextual analysis of four films by the writer-director Peter Weir, produced in the period 1974-1981.
