Persepolis, founded in 520 B.C., is the first palace complex in the world with a fine stone architecture. Therefore, the second volume of Shiraaz is devoted to a presentation of the stone architecture at Naqsh-e Roustam and Persepolis.
Although the traditional (the indigenous or the clay) architecture in Iran has a long history and may be traced back to the Sumerian time, about 7000 to 5000 years ago, in 520 B.C., a magnificent palace complex was founded by the Persian kings in about 30 kilometers north-east of Shiraaz known as Takht-e Jamshid or Persepolis. In the construction of Persepolis complex, stone architecture is used, but in some areas, where the guards' horses are kept, the clay architecture also is used.
