Jassamine, a teen age black girl is becoming romantically involved with William Williams, a white boy living nearby in a semi rural area of Nova Scotia, early 1940's. They become concerned for the welfare of a good friend, Thomas Grover, a promising Latin scholar. Tom's something of a dreamer, a recluse with few interests outside his Latin studies and readings about ancient Rome. He does, however, tell William he is being sexually abused be a Christian Brother at High School. William, Jassamine and a good friend Billy are not sure just what to believe as Tom strikes them as fanciful and possessed of a vivid imagination. Jassamine and William like nothing better than exploring the lakes and nearby forests in their home built dory, enjoy seeking out and watching the wildlife, even occasionally the hard to spot wolverine!
