Inspector McGowan can hardly believe her ears, when she is informed that a Mr Jack Houser has been found dead under the bridge on Dark Lane after spending the night waiting to see if he could spot the Headless Horseman of Ormskirk. But Mr Houser was a member of the Ormskirk Ghosts and Ghouls Society and from the look of horror on his face he clearly suffered a shock before he died. But the Inspector doesn't believe in Ghosts or Ghouls, and she certainly doesn't believe in the existence of the Headless Horseman. She does, however, believe in investigating every death thoroughly, and as she digs deeper, she discovers that Mr Houser was not only a rich man, but had recently insured his life for a very large sum.
