Hanford was where the Manhattan Project constructed reactors on the Columbia River in the 1940s that produced weapons grade plutonium that was instrumental in ending World War II. Information about the natural resources of Hanford and its present condition are discussed. Sixty Two photos of Hanford’s natural resources including the Columbia River, reactors, waste sites, habitats, and plants and animals are provided. The 570 square miles which make up the Hanford site contains some of the most contaminated land in the United States. At one time nine nuclear reactors were operating on the Columbia River.
