Almost 250 species of birds have been documented at the Hanford Site in eastern Washington. Hanford is where nine nuclear reactors were built as part of the Manhattan Project along that section of the Columbia River known as the Hanford Reach in the 1940s. Hanford is home to the largest tract of sagebrush/steppe habitat left in the state of Washington and as such is an attractive area for many species of birds and a place to rest during migration. Over 90 color photos of birds and Hanford photos are provided along with some general Hanford history. Today much of the Hanford Site has been designated as a National Monument and the areas that were contaminated by chemicals and radionuclides are being cleaned up and restored. These efforts will only make the 570 square miles of the Hanford Site more attractive to the regions natural resources in the future.
