The battle of An Nasiriyah took place on March 23rd 2003 during the initial invasion of Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom I). There are numerous literary works on the military battle itself that detail how things played out. Most contain a high level of accuracy on unit actions with some individual stories mixed in. When I started writing The First Step, which takes numerous creative liberties by the way, I wanted to display my true self, not the one that was on display for the Marines around me and the one that most people see when they look at me today. My path to that day began when I was a child and it never diverted despite many opportunities. The same can be said for the real as well as the fictional enemy small unit leader.
