In the early 1850s Australia received many Chinese immigrants. The Chinese were interested in a better life in the gold mines found in the mainland. Native Australians in the gold mines as well as factory workers showed intense animosity towards the Chinese. Riots broke out in Queensland against the Chinese. In 1901 in order to safeguard a higher standard of living and to maintain a unified nation of British influence a White Australian Policy was enacted by the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth believed that this would reduce the kinds of immigrants who came to Australia. The significance of the policy insured a unity among the white Australians and strengthened the well-established ties to British influence.
