On an Indian reservation in the American southwest, a six-year-old girl is missing. The tribal police think she has wandered into the surrounding desert and gotten lost. They know they have very little time to find the girl before the desert claims her life. Black mountaineer James Robinson volunteers to help with the search, but the officer in charge of the search effort forms a low opinion of James and teams him up with a discredited Native American tracker named Novia. Through flashbacks it becomes apparent that James has more mettle than anyone knows, as his courage, determination, and endurance have been tested to the limits, from the mean streets of South L.A. to the mountain passes beyond Kathmandu.
