Aquaponics: what is it? Aquaponics is the merging of two farming techniques: aquaculture and hydroponics: aquaculture is fish farming and hydroponics is growing plants in water with no soil.The word aquaponics (combines parts of both words) it is a system using the waste of fish to supply nutrients to grow vegetables: like hydroponics it does not use soil, and instead of adding nutrients to water as in hydroponics, it gets its nutrients from the waste of fish. Nutrient rich (nitrates) water from the fish tank or pond is circulated through growing beds filled with gravel or other inert growing medium where it feeds the plants which in turn filter all nutrients from the water and return it clean back to the fish tank, the plants in fact filter the water.
