The Christian Virtue of charity is the most important of all virtues. It has been called the Queen of the virtues. When speaking of the love of God, Aquinas asserts that "God is Love. (1 Jn. 4:16) We need to go back further to the causes of love in order to better understand the effects of God's love. Good is the cause of love. Augustine says "only the good is beloved." In other words, no one loves evil. Some love the privation of the good, but no one can love evil, since evil is the privation of good. Without good there would be nothing to love. But without existence there would be no good and nothing is loved unless it exists.
