Reflecting on the past of Social Media, I have looked at 5 key moments in the development that allowed Social Media to get where it is today. Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube wouldn't exist without the occurrence of at least these 5 developments: Bulletin Board Systems (BBS’s), Commercial Online Services, the Word Wide Web (WWW), Instant Chat Relay, and Instant Messenger (understanding-social-media.pdf page 10-15). BBS’s created an underground movement of hackers made possible by the connectivity of the medium, Julian Assange was a member of this subculture in Australia, this was how and where he first orchestrated information “searches” for humanitarian causes that he later utilized with WikiLeaks.
