Nobody likes a preacher. Everyone opposes all his claims. Do we imagine Solomon does not know this? He knows it alright, and this is why he starts by saying “All is vanity.” He means to get up our nose, and force us to react. If a person tells you “all is vain” he is trying to provoke us, and he is expecting a negative response. The idea is hard for us to accept. It claims we have difficulty finding satisfaction.
