Every year, multiple governments, watchdog bodies and academic institutions release statistics about how safe our hospitals are. In the USA for instance, the Journal of Patient Safety estimates that between 220 000 and 440 000 Americans die unnecessarily every year because of bad care given by doctors and nurses. In the UK, the NHS executive estimates about 1000 a month die for similar reasons, and in Australia, 18 000 lives annually are snuffed out because of ‘mistakes’ by healthcare professionals. However, that’s just bad care: mistakes made under pressure or as a result of substandard care delivered by incompetent staff.
