This is the commuter's diary of a gent of literary bent, chronicling his several years of daily shuttling between Oxford and Paddington. His chosen tagline is the deliberate misquote "man is born free but is everywhere in trains". (If you can place the origin, you're well on the way to being hooked.) His diary, apparently started as a defence mechanism against the rigours of commuting, gradually becomes an end in itself - Bob Sherunkle, Amazon. It is thirty years since Notes from Overground was published and about forty years since I began to write it. I gather it still gets discussed in various places on the internet. I am delighted that my offspring continues to live in this way. It has also been kept alive through other media, notably the late great Simon Hoggart who used to mention it from time to time in his columns in The Guardian newspaper - Tiresias, Hydra.
