NOTE: This is a short, biographical article based on original research. At the end of the Mexican War 16 lighthouses were approved by Congress along the Pacific Coast. Women often stepped in as lighthouse keepers when men were not available and this is the story of the 12 women head keepers at California lighthouses during the Victorian Era of the second half of the 1800s. They came from all walks of life. Almost all were wives or daughters of keepers who died or quit. Each brought a unique background to the job of keeping mariners safe. One, Julia Williams, light the Santa Barbara light every night for 40 years.
