Dr. James E. Talmage -- later one of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints -- was an influential Mormon scientist, speaker, educator, and author, even prior to becoming one of the LDS Church's most influential leaders. Reproduced here is one of Dr. Talmage's popular -- and more controversial -- lectures. The text of the lecture was only transcribed and printed in 1890. Dr. Talmage made several corrections and edits to the printed version but the lecture was never re-published. This electronic edition marks the first publication of the corrected form and has been carefully edited according to the handwritten corrections and changes which Dr. Talmage made to both the text and formatting of the 1890 printing.
