In this concluding story of the Trails series, young George Northwood (formerly known as Georgy), all grown up, travels back East from Oregon and lands in the middle of the American Civil War. Unwilling to take sides, having loyalties in both the North and the South, he chooses to use his medical abilities in treating the wounded—on both sides. Along the way he teams up with a young nurse from Montana, and rescues a little orphan boy.
