This short piece, a vignette about generosity, loss, love, and hope, is written from the viewpoint of the poor man in the Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas" (John Mason Neale, 1853). The song tells of a ruler who decides to bring food and firewood to a peasant he sees passing by outside on a feast day in winter, and ends with Wenceslas and his page heading off through the snow to visit the fellow. This story recounts the peasant's experience when Wenceslas arrives at the humble dwelling "right against the forest fence, by Saint Agnes Fountain."The carol was based on a historical figure, Duke Wenceslas of Bohemia, who was known for his charitable good works and adherence to the early Christian faith which was then in conflict with Paganism.
