This memoir from Auschwitz survivor Norbert Troller is the second of two that he wrote shortly before his death in 1984 at age 84. The first, Theresienstadt: Hitlers's "Gift" to the Jews, was originally published in 1991 by the University of North Carolina Press and chronicled Troller's years in Theresienstadt. This work, on the other hand, gives rare eyewitness account of the final days of Auschwitz before the Russian liberation on January 27th, 1945, and especially the final 10 days between the "Death March" that began on January 18th and liberation. Troller had been moved from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz 5 months earlier as a political prisoner because his artistic drawings of life in Theresienstadt had been smuggled out of the camp.
