It was April 1943 and we were part of the British bomber squad, our mission was to bomb the strategic control and command positions of the German forces located deep inside the fortified city of Berlin. Even after so many bombing runs on the city, Berlin was still intact with a wide variety of anti aircraft defences positioned all around the city, especially at the approaches. Our campaign contained about seventy heavy bombers, escorted by a squadron of dogfighters.
