When the Cuckoo Calls is based on the life of Paula Richter, a Polish woman born in 1925 in Lwów, Poland (now L’viv, Ukraine). After German troops assumed control of her town, she was captured twice, escaping both times, before finding her place with US forces and the liberation of Europe in 1945. It was then that she met her husband, Anthony Kazmierski, when his tank battalion came upon her camp in Austria. They moved to Rochester, New York where they raised two children. Paula died from Alzheimer’s disease on February 21, 2014 at the age of eighty-eight.
