While their fellow settlers dig in at Leif’s Landing, Gunnar the Gambler and the scouts Haki and Hyka trek across the island in search of the camp of the Beothuk war chief, Gobidin. At least, that is what Gunnar tells Freya is his purpose. In reality he has heard tales of gold in the rivers to the East and means to see if there is any truth to the tale. After splitting from Haki and Hyka he finds his gold, and also the source of Gobidin’s shaman like power over his people – salvja. Gobidin is using the powerful psychotropic plant to enslave the minds of his warriors and workers and keep them dependent on him and his addictive elixir. Haki and Hyka meanwhile stumble on Gobidin’s camp and find it teeming with warriors preparing for battle.
