Kurt Halder, only son of a German father and his American wife and WWI veteran, is unexpectedly recalled to active duty by the Wehrmacht. The year is 1941, prior to American entry in World War II. He is immediately detached to the Abwehr, the Third Reich's secret service. Halder is sent on a secret mission to the United States, Operation Janus, whose sole purpose is to keep the United States out of the war at all costs. In his clandestine role, he becomes enmeshed in the battle between the Abwehr, Gestapo, British Intelligence, FBI and the America-First Committee, as all parties struggle to make their own parochial use of Rainbow Five, the American army's secret war plan to fight Germany.
