My Parents' Last Years is the story of the final years of my parents' life. The title comes from the hymn “Count Your Blessings.” Among my many blessings are my parents. Mom died in 2008 and Dad died in 2012. I explore what I saw during those days when their decline so tempest tossed us. My parents' lives were cinematic— unique, adventuresome, and heroic. But their deaths were not the least bit cinematic. And yet amid the horrors and squalor, there were times to remind me to count my many blessings. When Upon Life’s Billows is largely Mom and Dad’s words but I also draw from my diary and blog. No one erected a statue to my parents. These words, carved out of affection and sorrow, should serve as such.
